How to Set Up Winter Potion Play

How to Set Up Winter Potion Play

If you’re looking for some sensory ideas for winter break... potion play never gets old! If you're wondering what potion play is - read on here. Potion play is fun year-round, especially during the winter season. This open-ended learning activity is easy to make and fun for all ages, and different every time you do it.

These are the DIY Winter Wonderland Potion Play ingredients that you will need to get started. (Add more or less depending on if this is an indoor or outdoor science activity).

  • 5+ scoops of baking soda
  • Liquid water coloring or food coloring
  • Vinegar
  • Essential oils (optional)
  • Edible glitter (optional)
  • Water

Other extras you could add:

  • Tinsel glitter
  • Sequins
  • Snowflake shaped sprinkles
  • Fake snow (baking soda and shaving cream)
  • Cranberries
  • Citrus slices

To set up: separate out your ingredients and any tools you will use to manipulate the ingredients. Idea: provide spare gloves or mittens to practice using our hands with cold weather apparel on.

Once everything is set up on your Flisat table and in your bins, the sensory fun begins! Hand your kiddos their very own science goggles (could be any real or play goggles, or pretend), and even a science lab coat (an old white t-shirt). There are no mistakes to be made, but do keep an eye on littles. Encourage the mess and conversation. This is a great time to talk about pre-science concepts like observing, comparing, measuring, and predicting.
